Each purchase may not seem big, but the impact is huge. For 96% of vendors, farmers market sales are important to their overall income (WSFMA, 2025 Vendor Survey).
These sales have deep local impacts, and are vital to launching new businesses, creating jobs, supplementing and securing livelihoods.
Collectively, WSFMA member farmers markets reported $ 94 million in total vendor sales in 2025.

When asked about the best part of selling at farmers markets, the top response – by far – was connecting and interacting with customers (WSFMA, 2025 Vendor Survey).

Farmers markets connect communities with farmers and other vendors from 38 of Washington’s 39 counties. This includes urban counties as well as the core agricultural areas of our state.
The incredible diversity gives each farmers market its unique flavors through the seasons.
Vendors also range in age – from 18 to 92. And there are more female vendors than male.
While only 25% studied agriculture formally, 70% consider farming their primary occupation.

While some vendors have bigger booths or may attend more farmers markets, most are very small-scale businesses. In fact, 61% of vendors only sell at one or two farmers markets. Around 8% of vendors sell at six or more farmers markets and have built businesses that rely on selling directly to customers.
Looking to the future, nearly a quarter plan to sell at more farmers markets this year.

Part of the fun is meeting new vendors every year! Farmers market are a great way to get a business started and learn how things work.
It’s also fun to see vendors who return every season! Nearly 40% have been selling for more than 10 years.
That’s dedication! What keeps them coming back? You! And building relationships with customers. Providing your community with healthy food. And being able to receive the retail value for all their hard work.

Farmers markets are vital partners in food access programs such as the WIC and Senior Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMNP), SNAP, SNAP Market Match, and SUN Bucks.
In 2024, low-income families used over $4.8 million to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and other staples directly from farmers and food businesses.
According to vendors, 92% told us food benefits were important to their sales. And 94% said that it was important to enable people with low-incomes to shop at farmers markets.

It takes a real can-do attitude, creativity, and commitment to run a small business. Add in the travel, booth set up, working in the elements, and no two days are alike!
The increased price of fuel, training seasonal staff, as well as housing and health care, can really add up.
